What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colourless and slightly sweet-smelling gas with oxidizing properties. It is known as the “laughing gas” and it requires a medical prescription.

It is produced through the controlled thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate or by reacting ammonia with nitric acid.

Nitrous oxide is applied in different procedures of the food and industry sectors, as well as in anaesthesia and cauterization in healthcare:

It contributes to general anaesthesia in combination with other anaesthetic agents supplied by intravenous injection or inhalation.
Adjuvant used in operation theatre or delivery room analgesics.
Cauterization (tissue destruction).
