Overnight pulse oximetry

What is overnight pulse oximetry?

Overnight pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method that determines a patient's blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate using photoelectric technology while they sleep.

This oximetry test is performed at home using a pulse oximeter, which should be placed on a relatively translucent area of the body with good blood flow. Recommended locations include the fingers or toes, as well as the earlobe.

Parameters evaluated

Once the overnight recording is complete, several key indicators for clinical diagnosis are analyzed:

  • SpO₂ average: average oxygen saturation during sleep.
  • Minimum SpO₂: lowest level reached during the night.
  • IDO (desaturation index): number of significant drops in saturation.
  • Heart rate: minimum and maximum pulse values.
  • CT 90%: percentage of time that oxygen saturation is below 90%.

This data allows us to assess whether the patient is experiencing desaturation episodes that may require further testing or treatment.

OXIGEN salud staff will explain to the patient how the equipment works and how to position the pulse oximetry sensor overnight.

After the study is completed, the patient will be scheduled to return the equipment, and the data will be downloaded. The report will be generated automatically and sent to the patient or the prescribing physician.
