What is oxygen?

Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe and makes up more than 20 % of the atmosphere of Earth. It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and oxidizing gas which supports combustion. It is supplied in gas or liquid forms, depending on application.

In medicine, it is used in life support techniques, oxygen therapy in respiratory illnesses, resuscitation and mixture of local anaesthetics in hospitals.

In the food sector, oxygen has several applications: in oenology procedures (fermentation and oxidation), food preservation (modified-atmosphere packaging), and colour and taste preservation of meats, fish, vegetables, juices, etc.

O2 is also used in welding and metal cutting, in steel and glass manufacturing, in the iron and steel industry and in several processes of the chemical, electronic and paper industries.
