Spirometry

What is spirometry?

Spirometry is a non-invasive diagnostic test that assesses lung function and measures a person's respiratory capacity. This technique determines the amount of air inhaled and exhaled, as well as the rate of air exchange.

This is a simple and quick test, essential for detecting, controlling and monitoring respiratory diseases such as:

  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
  • Pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung diseases.
  • Asthma and chronic bronchitis.
  • Respiratory disorders resulting from smoking or exposure to pollutants

What is spirometry used for?

This test allows:

  • To diagnose respiratory diseases and assess their severity.
  • To detect airflow limitations even before obvious symptoms appear.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory treatment over time.
  • To record pulmonary function values for comparison in future checkups.
  • To determine lung capacity before surgery or to assess the impact of certain work or sports activities.

The results are compared with normal reference values, helping medical professionals to design the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient.

How is spirometry performed?

At OXIGEN salud, the test is performed at home, eliminating travel and offering greater convenience to the patient. The procedure consists of:

  1. Place a disposable mouthpiece or tube connected to a device called a spirometer, which must be previously calibrated.
  2. The patient should be seated upright. If desired, a nose clip can be used to prevent air from escaping through the nose.
  3. Inhale deeply to fill the lungs with air.
  4. Exhale quickly and forcefully until the lungs are completely empty.
  5. Repeat the process at least three times to ensure a reliable result.

The equipment measures parameters such as:

  • FVC (Forced Vital Capacity): the maximum volume of air exhaled.
  • FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second): the air exhaled in the first second of a forced exhalation.
  • The FEV1/FVC ratio is key to detecting airway obstructions.
