Oxygen therapy
Oxygen is provided in steel cylinders at a pressure of 200 or 300 bars, with a pressure gauge on the top of the cylinder.
The oxygen cylinders are usually used as a backup source, in the event of a fault in the electricity supply, or for moving patients.
Connect the nasal cannula or the mask to the oxygen outlet on the pressure gauge.
Open the cylinder valve slowly by turning it anticlockwise.
Insert the nasal cannula or put on the mask.
Adjust the flow meter by turning the knob to select the amount of oxygen prescribed by the doctor.
When the oxygen is not in use, remove the nasal cannula or mask and turn the valve on the cylinder slowly until it is fully closed. There is no need to force the valve.
To avoid running out of oxygen, notifying OXIGEN salud that a replacement is needed plenty of time in advance is essential. OXIGEN salud should be contacted 24 hours before the cylinder is empty so that it can be replaced with a full one.
To make the calculation easier, the following formula can be used to work out how many hours of oxygen are left in the bottle:
(C x P / F) x 0,0825
Prescribed flow rate | B5 (1 m3) | B15 (3 m3) | B30 (6 m3) | B50 (10 m3) |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 l/min | 16,5 | 49,5 | 99 | 165 |
2 l/min | 8,25 | 24,75 | 49,5 | 82,5 |
3 l/min | 5,5 | 16,5 | 33 | 55 |
4 l/min | 4,125 | 12,375 | 24,75 | 41,250 |
5 l/min | 3,3 | 9,9 | 19,8 | 33 |
In addition, OXIGEN salud offers patients the OxiTEMPS app: an easy way of knowing how much oxygen is left in a cylinder.
As well as indicating how much gas is left in the cylinder at all times, this calculation also allows for more efficient use of the gas in each cylinder, as patients can make the most of all the contents of each cylinder.
