Pulse oximeters:
instructions, alarms and maintenance

How to use a pulse oximeter

Place the device on a flat, stable surface.

Connect the sensor to the device.

Turn on the device by pressing the ‘I’ or ‘ON’ button.

If the sensor is not connected to the device or to the patient, dashes will appear on the screen instead of blood oxygen level or heart rate values.

Attach the sensor to the patient:

  • Rigid/fingertip sensor: insert the patient’s finger (not thumb) as far as it will go. If the patient’s nails are long, they will have to be cut. The sensor should ideally be placed on the non-dominant hand. Different sizes are available according to the patient’s age. Attach the cable to the patient’s skin with surgical tape.
  • Soft sensor: insert the patient’s finger (not thumb) as far as it will go. Make sure the light emitter is on the fingernail. The sensor should ideally be placed on the non-dominant hand. Different sizes are available according to the patient’s age. Attach the cable to the patient’s skin with surgical tape.
  • Ear sensor: clip the sensor onto the ear lobe. Make sure the emitter and detector are covered by the lobe.
  • Flexible sensor: position the light emitter on the fingernail or toenail and the detector on the other side, making sure they are lined up. Attach the sensor with the adhesive tape. It should be snug, without restricting blood flow. If the patient is a child, attach the sensor to their big toe. Fix the sensor cable to their ankle or lower leg. Different sizes are available according to the patient’s age. They may be disposable or reusable.

Responding to an alarm

Respond to the alarm immediately. Do not panic and try to stay calm.

Examine the patient and aid if necessary.

Make sure it is not a false alarm and check the sensor is properly connected to the device and to the patient.

Act in accordance with medical guidelines and call the emergency services if the situation persists.

Cleaning and maintenance

Wipe the external surface of the device with a clean cloth and soap or alcohol diluted with water. Never submerge the device in water.

Clean reusable sensors with a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol. The sensors must be completely dry before you use them again.

Never try to repair the device or use it with extension cables or multi-socket adapters.

In the event of any electrical interference, try using another mains socket and make sure the potential source of interference (microwave, radio, television, wireless phone, remote-control toy, etc.) is as far from the device as possible.

The device does not require any special maintenance. Call OXIGEN salud if it is not working properly.
