Specifically, liquid nitrogen is used to eliminate parasites and insects in their different life stages: eggs, larvae, or adults. Insects, their eggs, and other living organisms are eliminated by freezing upon contact with liquid nitrogen at -197°C.

In the case of carbon dioxide, it is effective because it displaces oxygen from the environment, causing the pests to suffocate.
